Update on the Southwark Council planning policy documents:

Southwark's Local Development Framework is a portfolio of documents that set out our planning policies and will be used to make decisions on planning applications.
The planning policies influence what happens in Southwark and how the borough will look.  This includes:

The design and scale of new buildings
    Where we protect open spaces
How much and the types of new housing we build
Where there will be new shops and leisure facilities
How we protect our conservation areas and listed buildings
    Where we allow tall buildings
Where we project employment and create new jobs
How we can improve transport infrastructure and improve opportunities for walking, cycling and public transport
Southwark is currently preparing a number of planning policy documents as part of its Local Development Framework. This set of planning documents will eventually replace its unitary development plan (the Southwark Plan) and will be used when making decisions on planning applications.  The Local Development Framework includes the core strategy, area action plans and supplementary planning documents.

Southwark is at different stages for each of its planning policy documents.

More information on all of these documents can be found at:
    http://www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/planningandbuildingcontrol/planningpolicy/

Southwark wants to make sure that we are consulting as many local residents, businesses, community groups and local councillors as possible.  Please let them know if you would like further information or if you would like them to contact anyone to offer them further information. If you know of any meetings they could attend to let local people know about how their policy documents will impact on them and how they can get involved, please let us know.

    Update on the London Plan

The Mayor of London is also currently consulting on a draft replacement London Plan 2009. The London Plan, together with Southwark's Local Development Framework is used to make decisions on planning applications. All Southwark's planning policy documents must be generally consistent with the London Plan.  You can view the London Plan at:

    http://www.london.gov.uk/shaping-london/london-plan/strategy/

As a council, Southwark is putting forward its comments to the Mayor on the new London Plan. It is taking these comments to Planning Committee for comment on 19 January 2010 and to Executive for approval on 9 February 2010.
