Bakerloo line: option for a tube station in Camberwell

TfL are consulting until 7th December. There are two options, one serving the Old Kent Rd, the other providing for Camberwell and Peckham.  Extending the Bakerloo line South to include these stations would bring huge social and economic benefits to an area which, in spite of containing several nationally significant institutions, is blighted by clogged roads, poor infrastructure and high levels of unemployment and deprivation (in the bottom 20 percent nationally.)

    LATEST on Camberwell Tube option

Yes, its doesn't look like a today issue, but decisions are being made now that will impact our area

TfL have issued a response to the public consultation of last year. It implies that the Old Kent Road option is favoured. Amazingly, the methodology for assessing the options does not take into account the local hospitals, their patient and visitor traffic.

PACT campaign members are trying to get some traction with Kings, SLAM to get these organisations to make their case

PACTforBakerloo has been following up with TfL on the Bakerloo line options. We have been working with Kings, and SLaM to highlight the needs of staff, patients and visitors to the NHS sites. The Camberwell option, together with suitable routes south would provide a really joined up solution for the Trusts. Reducing car journeys is an important part of that story

We have managed to get Kings, and SLaM and TfL in a room together for the first ever roundtable discussion  (18/11). We all learned lots about each other's position. TfL is not allowed to say definitively, but we infer that decisions about choice of routes are being made between now and Christmas.

At this point, its not just about having the better technical case (in the needs analysis) its also about the political agenda. Whatever your persuasions, do take the time to ask both councillors and MP Kate Hoey what they are doing to raise the issue with TfL, show that you care about the Bakerloo extension, and can see the positive impact for Camberwell.

    Not a decision!

SE1 forum reported a decision that the Old Kent Rd option had been chosen over the Camberwell one.

This was based on information in the Commissioners report:

     http://content.tfl.gov.uk/board-20151217-pt1-item05-commissioner-report.pdf

We have been assured by TfL that this is not a decision, and there is still time to influence the outcome.

However, it does show what we already know, that the Old Kent Rd is favoured.

PACTforBakerloo is continuing to work with Kings, and SLaM to put the case for a station at Camberwell, which would improve access for patients, visitors and staff

Is the Camberwell train station going to be re-opened?

TfL has just published the background paper, explaining, in some detail why the Old Kent Road route is preferred over the Camberwell option for the Bakerloo line extension. This is not a decision yet, but its pretty clear what the direction of travel is. (pun was irresistable)

(click on where it says 'here')

Not good news, although the document is clearly biased, and there are follow up questions.

However, the better news: There is going to be a formal evaluation of the case to open the Camberwell Train Station - due to be submitted in August 2016.

Is this what we want as a community?

Is TfL committed to making this happen, or is this just a convenient way of deflecting our efforts to getting the tube?

If you have thoughts or questions for TfL please share....

    TRAIN OR TUBE?

    an update from PACT

At the end of 2015, TfL laid out its thinking in relation to the choices for extending the Bakerloo line. There is still some way to go, before a decision is made, and even then funding remains a significant issue. However, it’s clear that unless the criteria for the decision are to be revisited, the Camberwell route is not TfL’s first choice.

TfL have acknowledged in its document that there is still a major challenge in terms of access to transport for the Camberwell area. The London Borough of Southwark is now taking the lead, in presenting a business case for re-opening a railway station in Camberwell. This is due to be presented to Network Rail in the late summer of 2016.

We continue to believe, especially considering the timeframes for planning and building transport infrastructure, that we should be pressing for both for rail and underground facilities on behalf of our community, and our local healthcare organisations.

We will continue to work in conjunction with other community groups, especially the SE5 Forum, the Camberwell Society and with our local NHS Trusts – who are major employers locally.  We want to raise awareness, and get as many people engaged in the debate. The timeframes for the railway station are much more immediate and will need focus in 2016, to ensure that the best possible case is made.

To reflect this broader interest, PACT will now rebrand to stand for ‘Priority Action for Camberwell Transport’.  In 2016 we look forward to working with everyone who cares about Camberwell and our transport facilities. It would be great if there are other Minet hub participants who want to find out more.

What did the Camberwell Train station look like?

Where exactly on Station Rd was it located?
